Formed from Albemarle County in 1777, Fluvanna has a long history since early colonial days due to the trade conducted along the Rivanna and James Rivers in the 18th and 19th centuries. A system of locks and canals made these trade routes extremely profitable and brought great wealth to those small towns like Columbia, Palmyra and Scottsville. Today, that bustling enterprise is long past and those same towns are quiet reminders of a different time with wonderful old brick buildings and warehouses. Fluvanna County lies south and east of Albemarle County and Charlottesville with gently rolling topography in the western portion and much more level ground towards the Tidewater in the east. Large, easily worked farms are typical with very little impact from development once one travels a few miles out from Charlottesville. Interstate 64 passes through the County allowing easy access to both Charlottesville and Richmond, which many believe will become more important as business and research between these two cities becomes a significant factor in the future.
