Greene County is located just north of Albemarle County and Charlottesville and primarily west of Route 29. Formed from Orange County in 1838, it is known as the "Gateway to the Blue Ridge" and indeed rises up in elevation to actually cross Skyline Drive just 10 miles west of its County seat of Stanardsville. Greene County is characterized by winding country roads passing by countless small farms along the base of the mountains. Here, the streams run faster, the mountains loom larger and residents seem to be staying put rather than passing through. Southern Greene County has been experiencing fairly significant residential growth due to its proximity to Charlottesville and easy access via Route 29 but one needs only travel west a few miles into the county before returning to one of the most unspoiled sections of the Piedmont. Real estate values are some of the best in the area especially for those small farms off the beaten path.
